Another volatility indicator that we track along with the VIX is the 50-day high/low spread of the S&P 500. This takes the difference (%) between the index's high and low each day and averages it over the last 50 days.

Currently, the 50-day high/low spread is at 1.68% -- its highest level since early 2003.

Note that your 50-day Hi/Low spread tends to point to excess pessimism and therefore (relative) bottoms.
I am betting on a short term bottom for Tuesday(1/22) as my indicators are in "buy mode' and providing positive divergence with respect to the S&P price action.
