Bond Expert: Wednesday Wrap [view article]
When the market is thin, and at the end of a season, anything can happen as the kinks are pulled out. We must wait to see what the movers and the shakers think about their book. Frankly, I am fearful we are bottoming in the equities and dollar, that means bonds may be attractive for a while. Isn't that disgusting? Reply

So based on this, this is the scary scenario I had been expecting. The smart and fast money is going into paper in preparation for the coming deflation. This has been helpful John to know that the trades I've been planning to put on are the right ones. It also goes to affirm that generally the obvious trades are obviously wrong. Reply

Good review. The markets are about adjust again, this time to lower yields, but soon that changes and we will lose money in bonds and stocks. That should be a bottom for a while until the fall plunge. Reply

Beyond the sanctuary aspect, the dollar is doing better than expected vs. the Euro because Trichet is humming a happy tune while he drives Europe over the cliff.

Dear ex-fellow Treasury shorts: I was on the other side of your covering trades today! Thanks so much for giving me a price I never thought I'd see again at which to extend my position even further. See you at 10%! Love and kisses, bearfund. Reply

John, I confess that I have little understanding of what makes the bond markets tick. It would have seemed to me that with all the inflation, interest rates should have been rising like smoke in a forest fire.
I appreciate your insights here, and on your website. Good stuff!

Treasury Market: Confounding the Nonbelievers [view article]
The new bills issue was a surprise, but not unexpected. The offers of the GSE are what keeps everyone on edge. Who wants their equity when it is known holders will be stiffed if a shut down is needed to avoid government owership outright. This is classical government finance with Congress running loan policy and the agency hacks running the finances to pay the bills. It can not end well no matter what policy is selected. Credibility is the life blood of investment, and when its gone, its over. Reply

On the contrary, I think trading volume will be very heavier. I agree there will be volitility, and a tension between the bottom-seekers and those wanting to get out of their positions on price improvements.

However, in the bigger picture, what has happened?...FNM and FRE have been bailed out, all our other problems remain.

So at 4pm, I expect the market to have come back to only a modest gain.

The ETF shake-out begins. Too many index ETFs are insufficiently differentiated. And some (GLD and IAU; SPY and IVV) are identical. Reply

The Fed Capitulates, But Will It Help? [view article]
The Fed's recent cut of 75bps confirmed the market fear and do not restore confidence. The current global assets bubble (property) needs to correct itself. Inflation has to be controlled. I believe we are heading for a stagflation, where monetary policy is faced with a rising inflation and weak economic growth. The Fed should let the market correct itself.
