A Lazy ETF Portfolio Underweighting the U.S. [view article]
I agree with adding PCY, some FRN, PSP, and PFP. One can make a case for GLD as a subset of the commodities allocation, since gold is not only a commodity. Also, there's evidence that annual rebalancing is far more effective than monthly rebalancing (check out PIMCO website for article making case for commodities in portfolios to reduce overall portfolio risk - apparently monthly rebalancing greatly diminishes the effectiveness of this allocation strategy). I rebalance bi-annually, with good results. ReplyA Lazy ETF Portfolio Underweighting the U.S. [view article]
What about using something like DBV for your cash? I would use PSP & PFP for Private Equity or individual stocks. A small amount in PCY for EM Int'l Bonds. I really like El-Erian after reading his book and I'm curious to see how this portfolio holds up. ReplyA Lazy ETF Portfolio Underweighting the U.S. [view article]
You can do a lot worse than following a brilliant mind like el-Erian's. I decided to make a similar examination, comparing also the Harvard 07 and Yale Models. Although your case el-Erian investment-substitutes may be correct, I used:El-E 08 Symbol
15.0% VTI
15.0% VEU
12.0% VWO
9.0% BWX
5.0% BND
5.0% TIP
11.0% VNQ
11.0% DBC
7.0% PSP
10.0% CASH
100.0%
I was happy to see that my own portfolio strategy & investment selections vastly outperformed this ETF Model, but I wouldnt presume that the El-Erian's managers deliver the same performance.
Good luck with this!

Good start and good choice. I will be following the progress. ReplyWhere Are India’s Innovative Companies, Products and Solutions? [view article]
Excellent Article! Kudos to you for having been spot on! I am actually an NRI moving back to India this year. While your ideas for building the ecosystem are appealing I am not sure how its rewarding monetarily for people who wish to take these risks. I would love to know your thoughts on how you would incentivise private companies to build this ecosystem!(I have clearly no faith in the govt!) Good government leadership in Brazil, becoming great nation to invest in. It all starts at the top gentlemen. ReplyGlobal Price Increases Offer Several Investing Solutions for Inflation [view article]
Something I've always wondered about. If gold is an inflation hedge and it is currently well below its inflation adjusted high, doesn't that mean that gold is not a good inflation hedge?

I should have added that in the last reporting week, every single open interst long position in gold was matched by a naked short. ReplyGlobal Price Increases Offer Several Investing Solutions for Inflation [view article]
Given the blatant naked shorting of gold (engineering a $30 drop yesterday morning; three $20 drops in three days last week), how can gold be insurance against anything? There is a reason gold isn't $1,000, much less $2,000, and it isn't economics. ReplyETF Industry Data Summary: 1H'08 [view article]
I think it is great that more investors are investing in ETFs. I just shows that the market players are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of ETFs over Mutual Funds and individual stocks. I hope to see the numbers grow over the next few years. ReplyETF Industry Data Summary: 1H'08 [view article]
quick onceover suggests investors are getting more savvyin both diversification, including leveraged funds, bonds, etc
and intolerance to excessive costs (vanguard flies vs bgi, ssga, holdrs; or at fund level: e.g. vwo vs eem)
p.s. freudian slip?
"total ETF asses"?

The White Elephant That Could Destroy Your Portfolio, Part I [view article]
I'm back here now that a month and a half has passed. One of the posters pointed out to me that being taxed on your gains can be a problem (and I agree) but I thought about what has happened to all of those investors that have over the past six weeks, lost so much money that they wish they had something to tax. If you've seen my SLW posts, I've been loading and unloading that stock as it channels between $14 and $15.30. Q4, I go long SLW. To those that followed my previous public blog, thanks for the occasional mention that you miss reading it everyday. That means a lot to me, and I've seen your posts.
