    • Year End Review of My Income Portfolio
      Richandmer,
The portfolios and posts on my blog are a learning process for me. SA is kind enough to reprint my thoughts here. The Income Portfolio has performed similar to the overall market. Its biggest downfall was an over reliance on energy stocks. I put the portfolio into an actively manage mode for the 2nd half of 2008, so absorbed all of the bad news for that period.

I have found I tend to stock with a stock too long when the news is bad. I am pretty comfortable with where the stocks in the portfolio are now and they have performed well for the first few days of the new year. Check back to my site in a few months and see how things are going.

Well I messed up part of my sharp response. Sitting now at 1 million shares traded. Counted too many zeros.

Dang, GNK is up 17% today! On 900 million shares. Must be a lot of non-professional buyers. Oops, the stock is 80% held by institutional investors.

It will be interesting to see at what rate the next couple of ships lease out at but nothing is certain at this time.

    • Will Terra Industries Become a Leader in Clean Diesel Technology?
Bob, that could very well be true. My experience is in heavy trucks where they all will be using SCR. I would guess that trucks use many times the diesel fuel that diesel powered autos do or ever will.

Nitrogen products do not come from food products. They are manufactured from natural gas.

Jegan, I have been stating that the bottom will occur when foreclosures are not a significant percentage of sales and we see an increase in average prices. I have considered the much higher sales volume in 2008 a positive sign but not the indication of a turn around. There is not a bottom until prices bottom.

    • California Housing Recovery? Not So Fast
There is a big difference between the existing housing market and new housing. Homebuilders will not be building homes until the overall pricing moves to the positive. It is foolish to start building new homes that will sell for less money in 6 months. New starts and permits will continue to fall until the existing housing market turns positive for a while.

I saw that builders took out a total of only 180 permits in Las Vegas for November. Builders there have been managing to sell 1,000 new homes a month even the tough 2008 environment. Homebuilders are close to an almost complete cessation of new home building. The smart ones are hoarding cash and either writing down or selling their real estate. Those that keep building are just throwing their cash in a hole.

    • Baltic Capesize Index Surges: A Step Towards Industrial Recovery?
Darburro, excellent comments and some items I had not considered. If you look at the May peaks in BDI and BCI they were an abnormality that lasted for a few weeks. Over the last year I would guess the average for the indices at about 60% of the peak numbers.

    • 3 Shippers Buoyed by Positive Movement from the Baltic
DItto. NAT and FRO are tanker companies. Nothing to do with dry freight rates. Tanker rates have been strong in December as producers are using tankers as storage rather than sell oil at less that $50. It cost less than $1.50 per barrel to store oil in a tanker for a month even as you pay $90k per day for the tanker. That's a lot of oil!
