  • Gold's Not the Best Investment in Inflationary Times
I am surprised that one concept has not been used in this voluminous discussion: STAGFLATION.

  • Algonquin Power: A Promising Renewable Energy Income Investment
On the advice of an investor newsletter, I bought this stock on monday. The stock went up 8% on that day and I was pleased. On Tuesday, the company announced a drastic reduction in the dividend and the stock crashed. It is still struggling to come back. I have also been burned on other suggestions by this newsletter. The author of said newsletter does not know what he is writing about. Like Enviro 111, I am in a holding pattern on this stock.

  • Gas Prices Will Go Up with a Fury
I have been investing in energy for more than thirty years. I would welcome a viable set of alternatives to petroleum but it seems to me to be somewhere between 10 and 30 years away from happening. I am appalled at the head in the sand attitude in Congress regarding the securing of domestic sources of petroleum supplies.

  • Environmentalism May Face Major Setback in 2009
I consider myself to be an environmentalist. I support the revival of light rail and streetcars. We have composted our household garbage for more than thirty years. We have a solar water heater that is saving at least $50 a month in electricity. I rode a bicycle to and from work most days of the week for 19 years. Our large backyard is a small farm , producing fruits and vegetables. I took a grandchild to an Elderhostel in 2002 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. I asked some staff members at the Lowell Observatory what they thought of the Global Warming idea. They told me the orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the varying output of the Sun was the main driver of temperature on Earth. I am paranoid about the Utopians who want to capture the economy and society. They strike me as fanatics who would control our every act.

  • Why a Psychological Bottom Will Lag Any Real Recovery
There is one aspect that the posters on this thread are overlooking. The Social Security System also pays modest stipends to disabled and mentally retarded folks, as well as certain people with chronic mental illness. I have no beef with this because many of these people would be in very dire straits otherwise. But what rots my socks is that this enormous welfare system is NOT paid into by government employees such as members of Congress, Congressional employees and, yes, employees of the Social Security System: "We have our Own retirement system"!! As far as I am aware, only the military, of all federal employees, pay into Social Security. Congress has traditionally screwed, blued, and tatooed the rest of the populace. Congress has exempted itself from OSHA, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, etc. They just gave themselves another stealth pay raise the other day. I believe it was Mark Twain who observed that Congress was the only original criminal class to emerge in the U.S.

  • United Socialist States of America? Not Quite
I found the author's description of the questioning reporter to be very revealing. My take is that the reporter was asking the poster to bad mouth the U.S. Certainly, the U.S. has many flaws and has made many mistakes but mainstream journalists seem to be obsessed with finding fault with, and criticizing the U.S.

  • Tradermark's 13 Outlier Predictions for 2009
I hate to say it, but your predictions have plausibility written all over them. I recall the alleged Chinese curse: "may you live in interesting times"!

  • The Economic Meltdown: Dismantling, Yes; Doom, No
I completely concur with RCA's outstanding comments. The author confuses his political opinions with economic analysis. Too bad we can't recall the war in Iraq and then replay history to see what the consequences would have been.

  • Why I See Long-Term Deflation
I like prudentinvestor's analysis. The only thing he left out is the word: "stagflation"... which is ,unfortunately, the worst of both worlds. It seems like almost all grocery items we purchase in the stores are higher. The local electric utility has won a 25% increase in its' base rate ,effective January 1. I believe the price of motor fuel is going back up in the coming year because actual production costs, for many producers, are higher than current market prices and producers will simply shut down. The bottom line: The standard of living for most of us will fall for some time.

A trenchant article with interesting replies. Allow me to suggest a synthesis: STAGFLATION.

  • U.S. Dollar: The Trade of the Decade
I sure would like to believe this scenario. But I fear the author has been smoking the really, really good stuff. I fail to see the basis behind the idea that the "assets" purchased by Bernanke and the Fed will turn out to be profitable. When I contemplate the fiscal recklessness of Congress and several presidents, I fear for the future of my grandchildren.

  • Jim Cramer Is Starting to Sound a Lot Like Lenin
I have begun to think that Jim Cramer needs to have his medication adjusted and possibly lay off the strong coffee. Many individuals on Wall Street have disgraced themselves and Capitalism. One consequence seems to be we are entering a period of Socialism. I am seeing a developing trend in the coming Obama administration to take the country in the direction of a Socialist transformation and this seems to have been his goal all along. The Wall Street crowd has just handed the country to Obama and company on the proverbial silver platter.

  • Exploring Madoff's Ponzi Scheme Will Unveil the Causes of This Global Monetary Crisis
This is a stunning analysis. But I despair of any solutions or remedies. BOTH political parties have been corrupted and the big coverup is now underway. We need term limits for congress and it should be a criminal offense for any former congressman to lobby for ANYTHING!

  • Oil Price vs. Gas Price: Is $1 a Gallon Realistic?
Bowman711's comment is interesting. I can understand the manipulation of gold because it is a relatively small entity and governments have, at least in the past, held a significant amount of gold to sell into the market. Oil and gas are a different matter. Economists are fond of the term: "margin" as in the term: everything happens on the margin. A relatively small move in demand may get multiplied in a large price movement, up or down. I wonder if this is what's happening now. I seem to see a significant drop in motor traffic in my area at certain times of the day or week.

  • Inflation? Don't Hold Your Breath
There may be another answer to the paradox of pay cuts, staff cuts, and work rule changes versus higher prices: It's called "stagflation"...
