No, but Iran is getting excited about the Gaza conflict and could cut off oil exports in protest or degrade Iraq's exporting capacity - or threaten to do so.

  • After having a go at Baidu.com (BIDU), and inflicting significant damage, CCTV now says Google China (GOOG) is also selling top-listed search-ad links to shady medical firms. China Yahoo (YHOO) and Sohu.com (SOHU) are implicated as well.
The difference is that Google identifies the ads. Baidu mixes them in with the search results, so the user can't tell which results have been paid for.

  • The Case for Making Bigger Cars
Yes, make safety, emissions, and design standards common with Europe.

This includes eliminating the truck loop holes that allow them to meet lesser safety, emissions, and fuel economy requirements.

The only problem being that making trucks function as cars without their loopholes would make them prohibitively expensive - and again help put Detroit out of business.

Good for humanity, bad for the Domestics.

  • Japan's own experience with the bursting of a bubble economy, a subsequent financial crisis and a recovery process could serve as a useful guide on how to contain the immediate impact of the financial crisis. (Taro Aso)
Right, because Japan faced a worldwide asset bubble through discordant national action.

Today's situation is unprecedented and possibly intractable with today's collection of federal banks + the IMF.

Japan's response is irrelevant, because Japan's response was coordinated between the government, reserve bank, and leaders of big business. The world as a whole has no corollaries.

  • Bailout, Schmailout
I'll never understand how $700B in loans to Banks is "responding to a free market crisis" and providing universal health care is "socialist."

If we're honest, health insurance is a natural monopoly, just like utilities. And, just like utilities, free markets lead to abuse of the weakest party - the customer.

  • Look Out FDIC
The FDIC exists to prevent unnecessary bank failures caused by runs on banks, not to prevent necessary bank failures caused by the failure of their business models.

We haven't seen runs on the bank and likely won't.

We will see many more bank failures.

  • Opportunities in the Real Crisis: Water
the point, so emphatically stated by user**** above, is that people consider access to water a right.

so be careful of any company privatizing water supplies. Bolivia showed us what happens when you take something that people consider a right and try to turn it into a commodity.

  • Is the FHA Effectively Condoning Mortgage Fraud?
it means that the buyers should be able to afford their loans. it also means that they have no skin in the game. so if the bet goes the wrong way, it is easy for them to ditch the property and let the FHA eat the losses.

FHA does do real underwriting, right?

  • An Energy Policy that Makes Cents (and Sense)
incentives are ridiculous and open to perversion.
