  • The Bull Case for Uranium
Nuclear waste disposal is an engineering non-problem. You dig a deep hole, put the waste canisters in, fill up the hole. It'll stay put, just as uranium ore bodies have done for millions of years. Ignorant journalists and predatory politicians have managed to frighten the public - as if radioactive material buried more than a thousand feet down in the desert is going to magically reappear in Harry Reid's vodka martini 90 miles away in Vegas. of course, the rational thing is to recycle the extremely valuable spent fuel and further exploit this resource, just as France is doing. Why not worry about all the toxic material that burning coal is spreading around instead?

  • Why Bush Doesn't Like Cap-and-Trade
I agree with Huangjin. Global warming is nothing more than a government power grab, and we will be pay dearly in loss of wealth and freedom for it. Cap-and-trade is tailor-made for politicians because they must set the CO2 allotments for every industry and company - a perfect recipe for extortion and political gamesmanship. A carbon tax will do a lot of damage but not as much as a cap-and-trade system administered by corrupt politicans.

  • Recession? I've Got a Solution
Thanks for your article, Saul. I agree with your thesis - substitution is the key to solving many of our energy problems. Unfortunately, the press has been totally irresponsible and alarmed the public about global warming and nuclear power, among other subjects. If we can overcome these prejudices, there are many applications for nuclear process heat in the production of liquid fuels. Such process heat can be used to extract and refine bitumen from oil sands and shales, to produce CLEAR product, etc. Of course, I also agree that plug-in vehicles make lots of sense, and they could be charged by nuclear-produced electricity. As vboring and DougM note, breeder reactors and fuel reprocessing could stretch our fissile fuel supplies indefinitely while reducing waste volumes. I am not a fan of Pigovian taxes to reduce demand since feeding the government monster always results in lower productivity and standards of living.
