      Jess, thanks for your comment. It illustrates an important point: when you're deciding on the ETFs to include in your portfolio, don't rely on the portfolio I put together when the Guide was originally written, as the ETF landscape is changing so fast.

      I hope that what readers will take away from "chapters" like this one is the principles: think about which indexes are the right ones to include, and go for the lowest cost and most liquid ETFs that track those indexes.

      Geoff, your contribution to this discussion has been outstanding -- thank you. Two quick questions:

      1. Did you include dividends and interest payments on bonds in the calculation of returns?

      2. Would your method suggest the same allocation now as you did then?

      Friday's Turnaround: Raid on the Shorts
      Bill, I've been thinking more about your article. I'm not sure that short-term trading is every predictable, and I personally don't blame journalists for reporting rumors as long as they label them as such.

      For me, the message of this episode is that most investors should invest for the long term, in which the short-term noise cancels out and the fundamentals dictate prices.
