U.S. could also restrict the number of Chinese tankers admitted to U.S. ports and greatly increase there docking fees to pay for the added security. Point is we can find things here in the U.S. to restrict that will cost Chinese companies $$$$. Aug 20 10:21 AM
    • EPA Rejects Congress's Ethanol Waiver [view article]
Corn based ethanol is just flat out a dumb idea that came from a bunch of no nothing politicians; the switch grass crowd. I would like to see it replaced by sugarcane grown in the southeast, Hawaii, and eventually Cuba and imported stuff from Brazil. Aug 08 10:07 AM

Muddling - The only way to do electric cars is to change out the battery packs like on your electric drill. The Israeli's are doing it right now with an electric car built by Nissan. They're adding swap stations all over their country.

Jim - I don't understand how you missed the big selling point on NG? Instead of sending $700 billion a year over to the middle east we're keeping the jobs and money here in America where they belong. We are the Saudi Arabria of NG here so why not use what we have in our own backyards?

    • Crude Oil at $122 Is Good News for Refiners [view article]
VLO is barely squeaking by and said at earnings conference call "they'll shut down before they lose money refining" or words to that effect. It's going to be interesting as CVX just reported a loss of 25 cents due to poor refinery margins. Seems like the refineries are refining too much product for their own good. No one should be required to give their product away while the public perception is exactly reversed that they're being ripped off. Go figure! Aug 01 09:31 PM

      Hey James,

You probably already read about this in the FT. Looks like other firms found out that SemGroup was short so they were buying more and more long to drive there competitor under forcing the crude price ever higher and higher. After SemGroup's BK the competitors are selling crude cause they no longer have any reason to buy long. Wow! Mean world out there!

Anyone know if the current Hybrids can be put on battery chargers, overnight, right now? Seems to me that produces the PHEV savings without having any upgrades and can be done right away. Jul 21 12:47 PM

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Freddie Mac Chief Executive Richard
Syron that Freddie and Fannie Mae are eligible to use the Fed’s discount
window, Reuters reported, citing a source with knowledge of the conversation.
Bernanke told Syron in their phone conversation that he intended to allow the
two government-sponsored mortgage giants to use the option, the source said.

Dan - If this is what you're taking about I couldn't find any conformation and then later news seemed to recant this. Bottom line is no need to use the window I guess?

Reinko - all good points. I think the new car debt is declining because smart buyers are purchasing the smaller vehicles which are lower priced then the big SUVs. I have two which I plan to retire shortly but won't be buying anymore SUVs or big V8's for that matter.

Bush could solve this problem with the stroke of a pen. Simply no new cars or SUVs, domestic or imported, over 3000 pounds period and new trucks could be purchased only by a licenced professional.

Now quite throwing tomatoes at me.

Maybe the 55 mph is a easier fix to save an instant 20%.

paultaut - I am thinking the Iranians have the tankers sitting there to block the straits with if necessary. They can maneuver them into position and sink them and then light the oil up. It will make one holy mess of the gulf as the Iranians are shrude opponents and should not be taken lightly. They invented the game of chess. Jul 06 05:01 PM

Fitz that's a great looking fish and I do agree with your tax increase ideas and about keeping America strong. Unfortunitly, the barn doors may be closing after all the horses have left. Gates and Buffet will have have moved their fortunes offshore, with the help of the charity, without paying their share of taxes and the whole systems seems destine to come crashing down on the middle class left holding the $9 Trillion bill.

If the 15% capital gains ends this year won't that cause a sell off of even oil stocks before years end?

Wait for crude oil to drop before investing. The oil stocks are decoupling from the price of crude and are dropping with the rest of the S&P stocks as folks realize oil is raising way beyond what the economy can support.

Fitz is contradicting himself by cheering for a tax increase and touting crude oil and commodities stocks since the tax increase will send everyone scrambling for the last of the 15% capital gains by years end.
