The One-Word Topic of the Day, and Week: Obama
GM's business model is fatally flawed, bailing them out would be a huge mistake and a costly one (they will just have to be bailed out again in the future) - If they go BK then so be it.

He mentioned his tax policy would result in a "net tax cut", if that means less money collected by the government, that will be bullish.

Another 'stimulus package' would just lengthen and deepen the recession. Similar to running up credit card debt to support a falsely elevated life style.

He's got to get his policy ideas through the barons in Congress - not an easy task. They will try to run the show.

      Thursday Outlook: Commodities, Emerging Markets
Not a Black Swan event since this was a predictable and logical outcome of aggressive government intervention into the housing and financial markets. We will not recover until we get the arrogant and ignorant Congress out of the markets. I'm on the sidelines (CD's, bearish option plays) until I see less intervention by the government.

If you think Social Security will be paying out benefits beyond 2020, I have some LEH stock to sell you. Social Security is a government fraud greater than FNM or FRE and you are a fool if you plan on it being around for more than 10 years or so.

I'm no fan of the Bush administration but we've had a sitting US Senator (Schumer) directly involved with causing a run on a bank. Where is the public outcry? Calls for censure? Calls for his resignation?

Apple's Balancing Act: 3G iPhone vs. Jobs' Health - Barron's
This article's shortcoming is that, for whatever reasons, the author chose not to disclose the previous health rumor spin articles that said almost the exact same thing written by Barrons and Fortune in 2006. This is just another example of market manipulation - and should have at least been discussed in an objective article. Shoddy work Mr. Liss,

Oil Is Up Due to Fundamentals, Not Speculation
So China's consumption has increased 7.2% per year, and the reason NYMEX crude as increased over 100% is? That's right, speculation by the IB's and others. The market is not working.

Who's Really to Blame for Rising Oil?
      Increase supply!
We need an intensive oil exploration and drilling effort off both coasts of the US, in the Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska. This effort needs to be as intensive as our program to put a man on the moon was.

      There's a Solar Shakeout Coming - Citigroup
FSLR and SPWR are similar to 'pets.com' etc during the tech boom. In ten years they will be faded memories of investors guilty of wishing innovation at pace not supported by science. These companies are good for short term rides, both up and down - but don't invest any of your own long-term money in them.

Uranium: Safely and Efficiently Powering the Future
You overestimate the wisdom of politicians. They will continue to spin their lies and spend billions of dollars on fraud solar and wind power scams. Nuclear power is the cheapest and cleanest power source available, but don't expect politicians or an uneducated public to understand the engineering and physics involved.

Can Cablevision Turn a Triple Play into a Newsday Homer?
CVS is just looking to spend money since the shareholders rejected the buyout offer by the Dolans to take the company private. So they buy Newsday, the stock tanks for a year or so and then they make another offer (at a reduced price) to go private again.

If Charles was going to run this venture I'd give it a decent chance of working, since he's a pretty savvy businessman. Truth is, his sons don't share his acumen (see MSG, Knicks, Radio City, The Wiz stores, etc for proof).

High Incarceration Rate Weighing On U.S. Economy, with Upside for Corrections Corp.
What a great source of labor to offset some of the incarceration costs. Remember, around 35% of our state and federal prison population are illegal immigrants - tighten up the boarders and the prison population will decline.
